Version 1.0 and 1.1 of my Windows Phone 7 emulator skin switcher were hosted on my SkyDrive but I got several requests from people to move it to Codeplex so I did that this afternoon.

I used your example to try and create my live tile background, but it is always coming out as a solid color. I set the text to a static value, just in case my binding wasn’t working properly, but still getting a solid background. Any suggestions?

You forgot one more ApplicationBar helper: the ApplicationBarBehavior on my Cimbalino Windows Phone Toolkit!

You can also find it on NuGet, but on the above address I have a full MVVM sample that does exactly what you show above (including Visibility property binding in the ApplicationBarIconButtons and MenuItems!

Thanks for your work on the skin switcher. It works great.

I have a skin to contribute. I created a skin with minimal borders and bezel, to use less space on the screen. I created it because my small laptop (Lenovo ThinkPad X220) only has a 1366 x 768 pixel screen. The emulator still won’t fit completely on the screen if I zoom it to 100%, but I can now zoom it one size larger than before. Many of the new Ultrabook laptops will also have this screen size, and a more compact skin would be useful for some developers.

@hector, i’ve tested a few and FAS seem to work yes. I never had any skin where fast application switching wasn’t working. (the skins are only images with area’s marked where the buttons are nothing fancy)

I have a blog post that talks about a similar process for generating tiles that uses PNG.

The biggest problem with setting the tile background color directly is that when the user changes the accent color, your tile might look wrong until you update it again. My post uses imagetools and uses PNG images.

Unfortunately – I’ve noticed that there are many cases when a control that doesn’t live on the visual tree doesn’t render quite right, even with a measure and arrange, a lesson learnt by bitter experience writing StormGlass.

Oh, and you can use to use http://imagetools.codeplex.com/ to render PNGs
